Nowadays we have a lot of action cameras like the GoPro 7, mirrorless cameras, gimbal cameras like the first generation DJI Osmo or phone gimbals for travelling. But DJI realized that for many people, especially for video creators it is hard to always chose between so many types of cameras and carry all the equipment around, so they said why not combine the best characteristics from all those and put them in a product which is smaller than your hand.
In the fallowing we will take a look at this amazing gimbal camera, its capabilities and also the wide variety off accesories that can add more functionality to this camera.
The DJI Osmo Pocket is a camera designed for video creators but also for anyone who want to record professional and extremely stable video footage. What this camera really does is dealing with all the technical issues that you normally run into with big phone gimbals or a bigger camera. It is smaller than your hand, you can basically carry it in your pocket anywhere you travel and have easy access to cinematic shoots in the palm of your hand. Now it is just about how far can you go, not how far can the camera go.
The gimbal camera is very well build, from high quality materials easy to handle and store. It is just 12cm in height and it weights only 116gr. Even with its protective cover that it comes with, it just fits into any normal pocket. It is amazing how fast you can get it ready. You just get it out of the case, press one button and in 5 seconds you can start to film.
The package that it comes in is pretty straight forward. Inside you will find the DJI Osmo Pocket, the protective case, a hand strap, Type C power cable which is great, a lightning adapter and a USB C adapter so you can connect the camera to the phone for accessing the pro settings mode and a bigger screen. Also it comes with "Osmo Shield" the additional insurance that doubles your warranty and also covers water damage.
This tiny camera records footage in super sharp 4K Ultra HD at a rate of 60 FPS at 100Mbps FHD: 1920 x 1080 and captures 12 megapixel pictures. Osmo Pocket delivers stunning results thanks to a 1/2.3-inch sensor, 80° FOV, and f/2.0 aperture. You can film stunning 4K slow motion footage or an entire project with 60 FPS to get better, smother results.
DJI is leading in camera stabilizers as they have tons of experience from manufacturing drones and gimbals for bigger cameras. The high quality gimbal ensures that the camera is entirely mechanically stabilized so you won't experience any kind of resolution losses because of imprecise digital stabilization. The effect of the mechanical stabilization is amazing, even while running. It is really impressive how stable the footage can be.
The camera is very easy to set up and use, you can basically learn all about in in just 10 minutes. On the front you have two buttons, one for recording and the other for turning the camera on or off. Also you have a little touch screen display which you can use to see what you are filming and access the different modes and settings.
In addition to that built-in touch screen you have the possibility to connect the camera to your phone with one of the two included adapters. This will allow you a series of things. Firstly you will be able to enter the Pro Mode and adjust settings like the ISO the shooter speed and secondly you will be able to see everything on a bigger screen or control and adjust the camera in much more detail. But in most of the cases the little screen is just enough.
DJI Osmo Pocket is also equipped with many intelligent modes that can make your experience a lot more fun, easy and help you capture cinematic shoots. The camera features face tracking which is amazing in case you are a vlogger, it can create stunning 4K motion and time lapses that don't require any post stabilizing at all. It has Active Tracking Mode which allows you to simply select and track any object or person you are filming. It also has more features like Tilt Lock which locks horizon and tilt, Follow Mode which locks the horizon and follows the orientation of your body, FPV Mode follow all axis and rolls with body, Panorama and the Night Shoot function(the night shoots are awesome).
The most fantastic function is the Osmo Pocket's Story Mode, which automatically creates short cinematic compositions that you can post on social media right after. It is very simple to use, just select the preset and take the shoots.
The dedicated app called Mimo is meant to set your imagination free with editing tools that inspires your one visual storytelling. Speaking about telling your story the camera has a high quality integrated microphone but you can also add an external one by using some of the accesories that we will talk about down bellow.
The battery of this camera will last you up to 140 minutes of use. For some it might be enough but for anyone who needs more, the universal port allows you to connect it to a external battery, your phone or to one of the greatest accessories you can het for this camera which is the Controller Wheel.
In terms of memory Osmo camera supports micro SD cards up to 256 GB, but you can also download the footage to your phone trough the app.
Overall DJI Osmo Pocket delivers incredible results, it is really a game changer because in such a small size DJI managed to put together very good image quality, high-end technology. It is very easy to use and you can carry it in your pocket so it is one of the best investments for vlogging and travelling. Amazing job DJI.
